What are Vascular Disease ?
Vascular disease encompasses a variety of conditions that affect the circulatory system, including the arteries, veins, and lymphatic vessels. These diseases can disrupt the flow of blood and lymph, leading to serious health issues. Understanding the types, causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options is crucial for managing these conditions effectively.
- Arteries: Carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart to the body’s tissues.
- Veins: Return oxygen-poor blood back to the heart.
- Lymphatic Vessels: Transport lymph fluid, which helps fight infection and remove waste.
Types of Vascular Disease
- Atherosclerosis
Description: Hardening and narrowing of the arteries due to plaque buildup.
Symptoms: Chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, and in severe cases, heart attacks or strokes.
- Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)
Description: Narrowing of the arteries in the limbs, commonly the legs.
Symptoms: Leg pain when walking, numbness, weakness, and sores that do not heal.
- Aneurysms
Description: Abnormal bulging of a blood vessel, usually in the aorta.
Symptoms: Often asymptomatic until rupture, but may include pain and a pulsating sensation.
- Venous Thromboembolism (VTE)
Description: Blood clots in veins, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).
Symptoms: Swelling, pain, redness in the affected limb (DVT); shortness of breath, chest pain (PE).
- Varicose Veins
Description: Enlarged, twisted veins, usually in the legs.
Symptoms: Visible, bulging veins, aching, heaviness, and swelling.
- Carotid Artery Disease
Description: Narrowing of the carotid arteries in the neck.
Symptoms: May be asymptomatic, but can cause transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) or strokes.
- Lymphedema
Description: Swelling due to lymphatic system blockage.
Symptoms: Swelling, heaviness, and discomfort in the affected area.
